This certainly isn’t the first time I’ve posted a blog about hiring a moving company. There is a very valid reason that I keep coming back to this topic and here it is; moving is stressful, hiring the wrong moving company makes that process mind-blowingly-horribly-stressful!
So the question is; how do you select the best moving company for your needs? Check out the list below for some tips on how to do just that.
- Ask for recommendations. Ask co-workers, friends, family and (of course!) your realtor!
- Research online.
- Beware of fly-by-night operations. They may seem like a good idea because the price is amazingly low, but be careful. When it comes to moving companies you most often get exactly what you pay for.
- Request a written estimate and contract. Beware of any moving company that just gives you a price over the phone. You are looking for a company that will give you an in-person (this can be done virtually!) in-home estimate.
- Get three of those written estimates!
- If it looks like a red flag – it is! For example, most reputable moving companies won’t ask you for a cash deposit before the moving date – if they are, take this as a red flag! Also, if they show up late to the appraisal appointment, you should consider this a sign of things to come!
- Confirm that the moving company is covered by insurance and is licensed properly.
- You also need to clarify, before you sign anything, their policy regarding any lost or broken items.
- Always ask what circumstances would result in extra charges being applied. Do you have to pack everything up yourself or will your movers take care of it for you? Will they provide boxes, blankets, and other moving supplies? Is fuel included in the price or will it be an extra charge smacked on at the end?
- Don’t leave any of the above to the last minute! In a perfect world you are able to book your movers 10-12 weeks ahead. This doesn’t always work, especially if you have fast closings on your home and the one you are moving into. Do your best to hire as soon as possible.
- If you need to hire specialty movers – do it! For example, if you have a baby grand making the move with you hire a company that specializes in moving pianos, and hire them to move it!
