Reducing The Stress Of Moving Day

moving day

Moving day is traditionally such a hectic and emotionally charged experience that few people relish the thought of going through it.

Does it have to be that way? Is it possible to ensure that moving day goes smoothly?

Picking a good moving company, or making similar arrangements to transport your belongings, is the obvious place to start. But here are some other tips you might not have considered:

Put pets in a kennel for the day. Pets may get excited by all the activity on moving day. They also tend to get in the way, or may hide where you can’t find them.

Hire a babysitter for the kids. It’s going to be a long day for you and it can seem even longer to them! It may even be ideal to ask a family member or friend to take them somewhere for the day.

Call your mover the day before. Obviously you will have had conversations with them prior to moving day!  However, the day before you should confirm exactly when they will be arriving and be sure they’ll be bringing enough supplies and a large enough truck.

Clearly mark boxes that contain items you’ll need immediately. Think about the clothes, cookware, computer accessories, toys and other items you’ll want to find easily during the first week in your new home.

Clearly mark boxes for the rooms they are meant to be in.  It can easily get really confusing to try and figure out what is in a box.  You may think you are able to remember but this really is not the time to test that theory!  Marking boxes with the room they will be in will not only help you – it will also help the movers to determine where to put your belongings.

Don’t forget to eat! Have healthy snacks available – moving day can make many people irritable – don’t make matters worse by being hungry! Vegetables, fruit, nuts, juices and water are all natural energizers.

Plan ahead to make your moving day drama-free. Unless, of course, you want to be on a reality show!
