Toronto Hydro: Winter pricing and tracking your energy consumption

It’s time of year to change your electricity habits.  As of yesterday Toronto Hydro time-of-use customers are now being charged the winter rates.  Not all customers are currently on the time-of-use pricing format but by mid-2012 the Ontario Energy Board is aiming to have all customers switched over.

For those of you that are on this pricing format the new prices are as follows:

  •  On-peak (weekdays from 7-11 a.m. and from 5-7 p.m.) – 10.8 cents/kWh
  • Mid-peak (weekdays from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.) – 9.2 cents/kWh
  • Off-peak (weekdays from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. and all day on weekends and statutory holidays) – 6.2 cents

If you are curious about your hydro habits you can register on Toronto Hydro's website for Smart Meters, which will give you your energy consumption data updated as recently as the previous day as well as usage alerts that are meant to help you track and predict your electricity use.
